Glass railings are now one of the most requested features in modern Nepali homes. They make balconies and staircases feel open and bright and give the whole façade a premium look. Here is what to know before you install one.
Common glass railing types
- Standoff railing: glass panels are held a little away from the slab edge by round stainless-steel fittings. It looks clean and modern and is our most popular style for balconies.
- Glass with a top handrail: a stainless steel handrail runs along the top of the glass for extra grip and a finished edge. It is ideal for staircases.
- Post-and-glass: stainless steel posts with glass infill panels. It is a sturdy, cost-effective option for terraces.
Safety first: what to check
- Toughened glass. Railing glass should always be toughened (tempered) safety glass, which is several times stronger than ordinary glass.
- Correct thickness and height. These depend on panel size and location. Your installer should recommend them rather than simply using what is cheapest.
- Proper fixing. Fittings must be anchored securely into the slab or stair structure.
- Neat, sealed edges. Good installers leave no sharp or exposed edges.
Maintenance
Glass railings only need regular cleaning with a glass cleaner. Stainless steel fittings can be wiped down now and then to keep them shiny.
